Distances Bending is a publicly shared artistic exchange between Clara de Asís and Rebecca Lane.
It explores distance as a condition of creative possibility – developing a common language through the sharing of words, sounds, images and compositional ideas – as a way to inform their collaborative compositional process.
Initially intended for the period of one month (January 2021), as part of the Goethe Institut virtual partner residencies program, the authors decided to continue their correspondance beyond this point. The material that they shared in January informed a series of compositions developed in February 2021 during the authors’s residency at Gmea – Centre National de Création Musicale d’Albi–Tarn, France. These compositions explore intonation, proportions, acoustics and elementary patterns. Sketches, studies and notes from this compositional process are also included here.
